The author announces their appearance with the verse \u201cAnd it happened thereafter\u201d (2 Sam 13:1), suggesting that, beyond the bare chronological sequence, David\u2019s crime is profoundly connected with the internecine cruelties that will ravage his family. Superficially, the rape of Tamar and Absalom\u2019s rebellion fulfilled Nathan\u2019s menacing prophecy that David\u2019s punishment, after the loss of his newborn son, would come from within his household. But an attentive reading of these two narratives reveals a more intrinsic link. As we shall see, the punishment that was inflicted on David both mirrors and inverts David\u2019s own way of bringing about the death of Uriah.
