When Bathsheba messages the king that she is pregnant, David has to devise a cover-up (v.5). He calls on Joab, his military commander to send Uriah home, ostensibly to get first hand information on how things are going on the battlefield. David is counting on his meeting with Uriah to grant the soldier leave time to go home to his wife.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Uriah declines the king\u2019s offer and when he meets with David<\/span> a second time, he asks, \u201c\u2018 . . . my master, Joab and Your Majesty\u2019s men are camped in the open; how can I go home and eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As you live by your very life, I will not do this\u2019\u201d (v. 11).<\/span><\/p>\n

There are two suggested reasons for Uriah\u2019s<\/span> not going home. One is that he would soon be returning to the front and it was customary for soldiers in combat to desist from sexual relationships. The thinking was that celibacy would make them more aggressive on the battlefield. A second view is that having spent a night in the palace barracks with his comrades, Uriah learned of the king\u2019s affair with Bathsheba.<\/span><\/p>\n

David<\/span> tries once more to get Uriah to go home to Bathsheba by getting him drunk. However, instead of staggering home, Uriah returns to his fellow soldiers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The next day, David<\/span> sends Uriah back to the front with a sealed message to Joab. In this message, Joab is ordered to place Uriah in the thick of battle to ensure that he gets killed.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Uriah is returning to the field, does he believe that by disobeying a direct order from the king, he has committed a capital offense and may be carrying his own death warrant? If so, he may also realize that he is a \u2018dead man walking\u2019 as there would be no way he can come out of this situation alive. Does this compel him to go willingly to his certain demise?<\/span><\/p>\n
