1.Bath-sheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite;\u00a0<\/p>\n

when King David sent messengers to<\/span>
\n<\/span> summon her to his palace<\/span><\/p>\n

The king commands; how can I disobey?<\/span>
\n<\/span>A lion roars, and no one can control<\/span>
\n<\/span>A hungry lion\u2019s passions, or its soul.<\/span>
\n<\/span>The lion crouches, waiting for its prey.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Ever since my husband went away,<\/span>
\n<\/span>I\u2019ve dreamt a greedy lion stalked and stole<\/span>
\n<\/span>A pauper\u2019s lamb; and no one could console<\/span>
\n<\/span>The man whose lamb the lion schemed to slay. <\/span>
\n<\/span>Why can\u2019t Uriah fly to me? How tame<\/span>
\n<\/span>My husband is, a gentle bird whose wings<\/span>
\n<\/span>Embrace my head and arms before we sleep.<\/span>
\n<\/span>He loves to sing to me and chant my name,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Then feather me with earrings, bracelets, rings.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Yes, I recall Uriah\u2019s smile, and weep.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Bath-sheba, the widow of Uriah the Hittite;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

for King David, her second husband<\/span>
\n<\/span> and the father of her son, Solomon<\/span><\/p>\n

The king devotes an hour every day<\/span>
\n<\/span>To teach our son to read the Torah scroll,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Recite his psalms, and gain the self-control<\/span>
\n<\/span>A future king must have; and then, they pray.<\/span>
\n<\/span>He smiles when watching Solomon at play,<\/span>
\n<\/span>At climbing trees or riding his new foal.<\/span>
\n<\/span>I know the king would sacrifice his soul<\/span>
\n<\/span>To save our son, this child he won\u2019t betray.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But what am I to him?\u00a0 A badge of shame,<\/span>
\n<\/span>A mark of Cain, a leper\u2019s bell that rings<\/span>
\n<\/span>As soon as I awake until I sleep.<\/span>
\n<\/span>He turns his head and never says my name<\/span>
\n<\/span>Although to all his other wives he sings.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Yes, I recall Uriah\u2019s smile, and weep.<\/span><\/p>\n
