  1. How on earth?<\/em> The story does not give an answer to the question of how we\u2019ve reached such a moral morass, but the plot line and its telling arouse thoughts about the corrupting nature of power, of temptation, of secrecy and lies, and getting entangled in them.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Uriah as mirror to David<\/em>. Uriah the faithful warrior serves as a critical mirror to David\u2019s corrupt actions. National service vs. private lust. Loyalty vs. betrayal. He rejects David\u2019s suggestion: \u201cThe Ark and Israel and Judah are located at Succoth, and my master Joab and Your Majesty\u2019s men are camped in the open; how can I go home and eat and drink and sleep with my wife?\u201d (verse 11). And then he loyally goes back to the front, personally carrying the letter that betrays him and arranges his own death.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. No need to apologize<\/em>. Yoab fears David\u2019s reaction to the report of the casualties of war, those that died with Uriah. But David\u2019s reply is almost apathetic: \u201c\u2018Do not be distressed about the matter. The sword always takes its toll\u201d (verse 25).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. And what about her?<\/em> Just two (Hebrew) words are reported as having been said by Bathsheba in this whole story: \u201cI am pregnant\u201d (verse
