For, it is said: ‘And David executed justice and righteousness (mishpat u-tzedaqah) among all his people’” (verse 15).

Rabbi Yehudah explained how David executed righteous judgement. He not only acquitted the innocent and condemned the guilty. But, if the one found guilty of a monetary crime did not have the means to pay up what he owed, David himself would make up the loss from his own resources. Rabbi Nehemiah objected strenuously to this interpretation, saying: If so, this would lead Israel to practice dishonesty (the guilty might take advantage of King David’s generosity by pleading poverty)! Rather, David executed righteous judgement by making the one found guilty of theft give back whatever he had stolen.

Our Midrash concludes with the following general declaration: “In light of David’s righteous judgement the Holy One, blessed be He, says to Israel: ‘My children!
