His prayer concludes with a petition: \u201cAnd now, O Lord God, fulfill Your promise to Your servant and his house forever; and do as You have promised. And may Your name be glorified forever\u2026\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embedded in David\u2019s prayer is his description of the special relationship between Israel and God (verses 22-24): \u201cYou are great indeed, O Lord God! There is none like You and there is no other God but You, as we have always heard. And who is like Your people Israel, a unique nation on earth\u2026\u201d &#8212; Just as there is no other God but the God of Israel, so too Israel is unique among humankind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Mishnah (Sanhedrin 4:5), God\u2019s unparalleled \u201cgreatness\u201d is exemplified by His having \u201ccreated Man as an individual\u201d, i.e. in the same \u201cmold\u201d as the first man, Adam; but nevertheless each individual is unique.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Gemara on this Mishnah (Talmud Bavli Sanhedrin 37a-39b) the particularity of Israel, reflected in David\u2019s praise of Israel as \u201ca unique nation\u201d, is cited twice in disputes between Rabbis and sectarians (<em>minim<\/em>), i.e. those who did not accept the authority of the Rabbis. Rabbi Yohanan said: Wherever the <em>minim<\/em> have cited Scripture to support their denial of the oneness of God, Scripture refutes their argument. A <em>min<\/em> first cites our chapter (verse 23): \u201cAnd who is like Your people Israel, a unique nation on earth, whom God went (<em>halkhu<\/em> \u2013 plural!) and redeemed as His people\u2026\u201d. But, Rabbi Yohanan counters that the same passage continues by repeatedly referring to God in the singular (verses 23-24): \u201c\u2026winning renown for Himself and to make for Himself a name\u2026Your people, whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt. You have established Your people Israel as Your very own people forever; and You, O Lord, have become their God\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, a <em>Min<\/em> argued: While it is written that Israel is \u201cone nation on earth\u201d, another verse says that \u201cAll nations are as naught in His sight\u201d (Isaiah 40:17). Rav \u2018Avina\u2019 countered: But your own prophet, Balaam refers to us as \u201ca people that dwells apart, not reckoned among the nations\u201d (Numbers 23:9).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, it is fitting that a unique people, Israel, worship God who is uniquely \u201cOne\u201d (Deuteronomy
