Thirty thousand people accompanying the Ark! A new wagon built especially for carrying the Ark (v.3). But, tragically, when the oxen carrying the wagon slipped, they caused the wagon to slip, and Uzzah, the son of Abinadav who guarded the Ark for twenty years, felt he had to reach out and grab the Ark to prevent it from slipping (v.6). God is furious and strikes Uzzah dead for his mistake of grabbing the Ark, for no one is allowed to touch the Ark with their hand.

Was it such a crime for Uzzah trying to help? A crime deserving the death penalty? Should Uzzah pay for the mistake of putting the Ark on a wagon – and was that such a crime in the first place? Never mind: It is God’s judgment. This incident reminds us of God striking down Aaron’s two sons back in the Leviticus, ch. 10, where Moses tries to justify God’s actions, and Aaron is silent.

David’s reaction is different. In verse 8 he actually gets angry, using the same word (vayichar) which describes God’s anger at Uzzah, and the implication is that he is angry with God just as God was angry with Uzzah! David names the place where God struck down Uzzah “Peretz Uzzah” – “The Striking of Uzzah” – and he calls the whole effort off (temporarily). David does not let God off the hook. He calls God to task to take responsibility for God’s divine actions.

David’s relationship with God, of being a great believer even when he is angry at God, was an inspiration to me when our daughter was fighting brain cancer. Thank God she is healthy now. But I remember being on the cancer floor with all the other children not only suffering from cancer but also from the effects of chemo, and seeing their parents going through the horror of having a sick, endangered child. I remember saying to myself: I am angry! God, see this suffering! Like the location Peretz Uzzah, the cancer floor has God’s name all over it. Yet, like King David – and with his inspiration – my belief in God told me that it was right to not let God off the hook: God, whom I love and I believe loves all of us: See your children suffering, and take responsibility for it!

Sometimes being angry with the one you love makes them even more a part of your life.
