It was placed on a new wagon and accompanied by Abinadab\u2019s two sons, Uzzah and Ahio, with Ahio leading the oxen and Uzza following.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At some point along the way, the oxen slumped over and Uzzah instinctively reached out towards the Ark to prevent it from sliding off the back of the wagon (6). God was angered, and He struck Uzzah dead on the spot (7). Since Uzzah appeared to have acted out of concern for the Ark, why was he so cruelly punished?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand the Talmudic answer, we need to return to Joshua 4, and repeat some of our comments there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the close of [Joshua 3], we left the priests immersed up to their feet in water on the eastern bank of the Jordan, waiting with the Ark while the rest of the people crossed over. When that crossing was complete, God instructed Joshua to have the priests \u201cascend from the Jordan\u201d (verses 16-17) and \u201cas soon as the soles of the priests&#8217; feet were drawn up unto the dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place as before\u201d (18).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To which \u201cdry ground\u201d were the priests\u2019 feet drawn up? While logic would have it that the reference is to the west bank of the Jordan\u2014where the rest of the nation awaited them\u2014a talmudic Aggadah insists that the priests retreated to the eastern bank, whereupon \u201cthe Ark bore its bearers aloft and crossed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi, following this aggadah, explained Uzzah\u2019s sin: \u201cHe should have expounded <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a fortiori<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kal va-homer<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]: The Ark carried its own porters over the Jordan, is it not all the more so [that it is able to carry] itself?\u201d Rashi labels the crime a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shegagah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning unintentional, perhaps implying that the severity of his punishment was also intended to serve as a
