What does it take to be sure of oneself and one\u2019s path in life?<\/span><\/p>\n

David was selected from among all his brothers and anointed by a prophet. He defeated a lion, a giant, and hundreds of Philistines. With no effort on his part, Saul\u2019s killer brought him Saul\u2019s crown; the last real supporter of Saul\u2019s house defected to David\u2019s side and then was killed for good measure; and Saul\u2019s potential heir was killed in his bed.<\/span><\/p>\n

If that weren\u2019t enough \u2013 II Samuel chapter 5 opens with \u201call the tribes of Israel\u201d formally approaching David, acknowledging him as the superior warrior and as God\u2019s chosen ruler, and (re-)anointing him.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is David sure yet?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDavid kept growing stronger, for the LORD, the God of Hosts, was with him\u201d (v. 10).<\/span><\/p>\n

Still not.<\/span><\/p>\n

Only after <\/span>King Hiram of Tyre sent materials and workers who \u201cbuilt a palace for David\u201d (v. 11) \u2013 only then do we read \u201cThus David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingship \u2026\u201d (v. 12).<\/span><\/p>\n

What is it about the help of a non-Jewish king that leaves David fully confident in his position as the Jewish king?<\/span><\/p>\n

On one hand, this is often the way of confidence. We might basically know something \u2013 but external validation brings that knowledge to a whole new level, as when one feels prepared for a test and then receives the confirmation of an \u201cA,\u201d or tests a solid theory in the lab and finds that it holds. In the realm of decisions, as well: a Jew who observes kashrut will sometimes walk just a little taller when a non-Jewish acquaintance commends that commitment. Perhaps even for King David, what he\u2019d long known became all the more real when he discovered an outsider knew it too.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, Malbim (on 7:1) suggests David\u2019s knowledge in this verse refers more specifically to his conclusion that it must be time to build God a Temple:<\/span><\/p>\n

Two conditions were necessary for building the Temple: One, having a king; and two, having rest from their enemies\u2026 David thought both conditions were fulfilled\u2026 He saw the house that Hiram built him as a sign \u2018<\/span>that the LORD had established him as king over Israel\u2019 (5:2)\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

In this understanding, David\u2019s \u201cknowledge\u201d was not a reaction to Hiram\u2019s recognition, but to the physical palace he\u2019d built.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, David then discovers he\u2019s wrong and the Temple will have to wait. We might also note, then, that \u201cknowledge\u201d \u2013 even about something that seems to have universal support \u2013 is rarely 100%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
