Then: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The king and his men set out for Jerusalem against the Jebusites who inhabited the region. David was told, \u201c\u2018You will never get in here! Even the blind and the lame will turn you back\u2019&#8230; But David captured the stronghold of Zion; it is now the City of David (verses 5-7).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This perplexing narrative of David\u2019s confronting the blind and the lame in capturing the city of Jebus &#8212; later his capital, Jerusalem (see I Chronicles 11:4) &#8212; is elaborated in the early medieval composition Pirke de-Rabbi Eliezer (Chapter 36). This extended midrashic narrative begins with Abraham\u2019s purchasing the Cave of Machpelah (Genesis Chapter 23),\u00a0 according to the Midrash, from the Jebusites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They made this sale conditional on Abraham\u2019s taking an oath, confirmed in a perpetual deed, that Abraham\u2019s descendants would not take possession of Jebus without the agreement of their Jebusite descendants. To ensure the future fulfillment of this covenant, the Jebusites set up copper images in the city street on which they inscribed Abraham\u2019s oath. Later, David was initially unable to enter Jebus, when he was told: \u201c\u201cYou will never get in here! Even the blind and the lame will turn you back\u201d (5:6). The Midrash learns that these \u201cblind and lame\u201d were the copper images that had been set up by Jebusites (see Psalms 115:4-7 &#8212; \u201cTheir idols&#8230; They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell. They have hands, but cannot touch, feet, but cannot walk\u201d). And it was because of Abraham\u2019s oath preventing the Israelites from conquering Jebus, inscribed on these copper idols, that David\u2019s advance was temporarily halted. So then, David said to his men: \u201cWhoever attacks the Jebusites first will be the chief officer\u201d. And it was Joab, son of Zeruiah, who attacked first, and became David\u2019s chief (I Chronicles 11:6). According to the midrash, David ordered that the one to become chief would be the one who removed from Jebus the blind and lame idols on which was inscribed Abraham\u2019s oath.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the wall of ancient Jebus has now been uncovered in the City of David excavations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: Jebusite wall, City of David &#8211; The Walls of the Jebusite city, prior to David&#8217;s conquest.
