And Ish-Bosheth\u2019s head they took and buried in the grave of Abner in Hebron.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commentary<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The dismembering of malefactors or prisoners was a common ancient Near Eastern practice, as we have seen before (and compare the first chapter of Judges). Here the corpses are defiled by cutting off the hands that did the killing and the feet that carried the killers into the victim\u2019s bedchamber. The whole episode ends in a strange image cluster of detached body parts: the hands and feet of the two executed assassins and the head of their victim. Even as David is about to assume control of a united monarchy, we have an intimation of mayhem and dismemberment that is an apt thematic prelude to the story of David\u2019s reign.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From: Robert Alter, <em>The Hebrew Bible<\/em>, vol. 2: Prophets, W.
