When King Saul would see a group of scholars, he would give them food and drink. And what is meant by “who decked your robes with jewels of gold”? When King Saul would hear the biblical basis for a Halakah from the mouth of a Sage, he would praise him [according to Midrash Shmuel 25:1 — Saul “would stand and kiss him on his mouth!”]. But Rabbi Yehudah says that Benot Yisrael really does refer to the Daughters of Israel, for when their husbands would go out to war, King Saul would feed them and support them and clothe them in crimson and finery. And from the continuation of the verse: ‘who decked your robes with jewels of gold,’ we learn that a jewel is only suitable when worn on a well-dressed body.”

Saul’s sartorial generosity to the Daughters of Israel may also be the biblical basis of the Halakhic stipulation that, in order to rejoice on festivals with his household, a man must buy his wife clothes and jewelry according to his financial ability (Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim 529:2).

Image: Henry Le Jeune, “Ye Daughters of Israel, Weep Over Saul,” / the atheneum

Le Jeune, Henry, 1819-1904;
