But in this chapter, we see another side to the great leader: as he journeys from Israel to the land of the Philistines, his political savvy is on full display. Specifically, knowing the Akhish was an enemy of the Israelities, David takes every opportunity to proactively dispel any notion that he might seek to harm the king.

To begin, David arrives accompanied by some 600 men, making it clear, as Malbim notes, that he was not coming as a spy. What is more, the verse stresses that David came with his family. This suggests that David came not to plunder the area and flee, but to settle peacefully with his family. After all, if his intentions were not peaceful, why would he bring his family and risk their lives?

David then requests to live not in the capital city but in a city surrounded by fields. Why does he specifically exclude the possibility of living in a walled city? Metzudat David notes that this too was intended to dissuade the king from suspecting him of establishing a seditious state. By leaving himself fully exposed, David signaled his peaceful intentions.

David goes on to pillage Geshurite, Gizrite and Amalakite cities. He offers the loot to the king, further winning his trust. Seeking to protect himself, David lies and tells the king that he looted cities beyond the king’s territory, including Israelite cities.

All this was enough to convince Akhish that not only was David not planning to foment a rebellion, but in fact had become a trusted ally. Apparently, the rumors were true: David had been expelled from among the Israelites (presumably due to his rivalry with Saul), and the renowned warrior had now joined the side of the enemy.

Often we think of these as two types of leaders: the soaring spiritual persona and the hard-nosed political and military strategist. The legacy of King David is that the greatest of leaders can transcend these facile categorizations and embody a more holistic model of leadership.

isam27-chess
