In 1 Samuel 23, Saul plays armchair psychologist. \u2018Saul was told that David had come to Keilah, and Saul thought, \u201cGod has delivered him into my hands, for he has shut himself in by entering a town with gates and bars.\u201d\u2019 Although Saul\u2019s plan ultimately did not work, he intuitively understood that people are most vulnerable when they feel a false sense of security.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The walls of Keilah may have been physical, but they also teach an important metaphorical message. Naturally, we all like to stay in our comfort zones, secure with the people we know and the ideas we agree with. However, doing so all the time can be dangerous.\u00a0 If we are too secure, relying on our walls for security, whether physical or figurative, we leave ourselves vulnerable. Sometimes we need to step out of our comfort zone.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a universal message, popular in literature, among other places. For example, we see this in Charlotte\u2019s Web. Most of the animals in the barn are suspicious of the other animals, even while living together. However, Wilbur, the pig, is more outgoing and strikes up a friendship with Charlotte, a spider. Their friendship ultimately inspires the other animals to leave their comfort zone to work together to save Wilbur and Charlotte. Had the animals stayed in their respective comfort zones, walled into their own lives, nothing would have been done.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saul\u2019s insight is as important today as it was then. We are safest when we leave our protective environments and see what is outside our literal or figurative
