Jonathan<\/span>
\n<\/span>When my father stabs me with his jibes,<\/span>
\n<\/span>I shrink away, like a stream deprived of water \u2013 \u00a0 <\/span> \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>
\n<\/span>I walk with David in the vales<\/span>
\n<\/span>for only he can hear the words beneath the ones I say.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

David<\/span>
\n<\/span>When I am nothing but a clod of earth,<\/span>
\n<\/span>at a loss for melody and psalm,<\/span>
\n<\/span>and fear that G-d may not receive my thoughts,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Jonathan hears<\/span>
\n<\/span>the words I cannot express.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Jonathan<\/span>
\n<\/span>When my father\u2019s melancholy turns to rage<\/span>
\n<\/span>I escape the palace for a breath of air \u2013<\/span>
\n<\/span>I walk with David through a wadi in the wilderness<\/span>
\n<\/span>for only he can hear the scream that barely leaves my lips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

David<\/span>
\n<\/span>When enemies encircle me as fields of thorns on fire<\/span>
\n<\/span>Jonathan finds me praying in a cave.<\/span>
\n<\/span>Though I fear G-d may not listen to my prayer<\/span>
\n<\/span>Jonathan hears<\/span>
\n<\/span>the scream refusing to leave my throat.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

II\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Jonathan<\/span>
\n<\/span>When courtiers nag me for an audience with the king<\/span>
\n<\/span>and a myriad requests invade,<\/span>
\n<\/span>I walk with David in the hills<\/span>
\n<\/span>and he gives me his melodies and psalms.<\/span><\/p>\n

David<\/span>
\n<\/span>When nightmares plague my sleep<\/span>
\n<\/span>and I have none with whom to share the pain<\/span>
\n<\/span>I walk with Jonathan in the hills<\/span>
\n<\/span>for only he can hear<\/span>
\n<\/span>my melodies and psalms.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Jonathan<\/span>
\n<\/span>When parents\u2019 expectations grate and make me flee<\/span>
\n<\/span>and I have none with whom to share my dreams,<\/span>
\n<\/span>David listens as we walk together in the hills<\/span>
\n<\/span>and he gives me his melodies and psalms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

David<\/span>
\n<\/span>When the palace seeks my life and I know not where to hide,<\/span>
\n<\/span>Jonathan comes and finds me shelter from the night.<\/span>
\n<\/span>We sit together in the hills<\/span>
\n<\/span>and even in the storms he stays to hear<\/span>
\n<\/span>my melodies and psalms.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
