It was chosen on account of the words \u201cTomorrow is the month\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machar chodesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) with which Jonathan addressed David (18).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recurring phenomenon in this chapter is how future conduct or behavior is assumed to be revealed through specific actions or words. First, David told Jonathan that he plans to absent himself from the royal table and asked his dear friend to \u201ccover\u201d for him by saying that he was invited home for a family affair. David reasoned that if Saul accepted that excuse for his absence, then he was free and clear, otherwise it signaled that the king\u2019s intentions towards him were malign (5 ff.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next, Jonathan and David contrived a way to get the message to David through a subterfuge. David was to secret himself in a particular place; Jonathan would practice archery nearby, and the manner in which he dispatched his lad to retrieve the arrows would alert David to the king\u2019s mood (19 ff.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These incidents are highly reminiscent of an earlier one in which Jonathan and his armor bearer launched their commando-style attack on the Philistines based on how the sentry would challenge them (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/246\/post\/57972\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see our comments to chapter 14<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and to Gideon\u2019s predicating his nighttime raid on the Midianites on overhearing the recitation of a dream. In all, the Israelites seem to have been adept at psychologically profiling their adversaries, and using that analysis as a basis for predicting their actions and dealing with
