Adam and Eve were partners, but then there was no-one else but them. Moses worked closely with his brother Aaron, and Ruth left her people to accompany her mother-in-law, Naomi. But those are relational alliances, which are an entirely different dynamic than “just friends”. We may have a better understanding of the Torah nature of friendship if we look to the halls of Torah learning, typified by the model in which two people engage in intensive study for the purpose of both partners growing in their breadth and depth of understanding and spirituality. It’s no coincidence that this learning model is called ‘chavruta’ from the same word meaning ‘friendship’.

Rabbi Dan Roth of Aish HaTorah, in his article Friends for Life: A Jewish Perspective on Friendship, refers to the commentators on the Mishna who describe the purpose of a friend being to have someone to learn and grow from; someone who encourages us to grow while being honest about our weaknesses; “to expand our personalities and broaden our way of thinking.” Bringing that thinking to today, if we could focus on broadening how we think and how we see the world, rather than embed ourselves in the echo-chamber of our fast-held opinions, we could truly leverage the power of social media for purposeful friendship. The collective growth of spirituality could be exponential with that basis for friendship.

As the song lyrics, of unknown origin say (with apologies
