What does that mean for today?","content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The daily chapter describes an event that occurred on the day before the new moon, at the beginning of the new month (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machar Rosh Chodesh<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I understand Rosh Chodesh to mean a kind of a beginning, a new chapter, and above all, an opportunity to reroute, fine tune, and reorganize.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do we take advantage of this opportunity?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Even Shoshan Hebrew dictionary lists two key meanings under the entry &#8220;tomorrow&#8221; (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">machar<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomorrow in the literal sense \u2013 the following day, one day on. (&#8220;Tomorrow<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a rest day, a holy Sabbath to the Lord&#8221; Ex. 16:23)<\/span><b>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomorrow meaning in the near or distant future (&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your son asks you in time to come&#8221; Deut. 6:20).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our attitude to the concept of &#8220;tomorrow&#8221; is mixed.\u00a0 Sometimes we consider it to be exact and binding, and at other times, as a general promise or hope for the future (&#8220;No problem, I&#8217;ll take care of it tomorrow&#8221; or ma\u00f1ana).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reading this chapter teaches us to incorporate both aspects of &#8220;tomorrow&#8221; when looking ahead.\u00a0 This idea is based on the understanding that a single day is not an independent entity, but rather an act or event that we do or experience tomorrow (in the literal sense) but which contain the seeds of the near or distant future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tension between Saul and David, and the secret code that Jonathan devised to let David know what the immediate (tomorrow) and distant future holds was not intended for David alone, but also for future generations. &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behold, the arrows are beyond you&#8221;. These words were not only intended for that specific occasion but also, I believe, he was also &#8220;prophesizing&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">future events about a split in the kingdom of Israel and tribal divisions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinking about the concept of &#8220;tomorrow&#8221; and the phrase <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machar Rosh Chodesh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> makes me wonder if the Scripture is trying to teach us to view every single tomorrow as if it were a new beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Saul celebrated the new month, &#8220;all those who eat at the king&#8217;s table came on the festive day to the table and no one was absent&#8221; (Rashi: I Sam. 20:18).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the beginning of each month, everyone has to be present before the king.
