  1. New moon? Par-tay!<\/span><\/i> The new moon is revealed in this chapter to be a full-blown holiday, which, like any festival worthy of the name, is celebrated with a big family feast, including in the royal family.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Well-worn alibi.<\/span><\/i> The family sacrifice in Bethlehem, which serves as the cover story to explain David\u2019s absence from the royal festival meal, is reminiscent of the excuse that God suggested to Samuel, when he went to anoint David in Bethlehem: \u201csay, \u2018I have come to sacrifice to the LORD\u2019\u201d (16:2).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. It\u2019s either him or you<\/em>. Saul clarifies to Jonathan the meaning of being loyal to David. \u201cFor as long as the son of Jesse lives on earth, neither you nor your kingship will be secure\u201d (verse 31).<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Whose son are you? <\/span><\/i>In the description of the very hard conversation between Saul and his son Jonathan, the word \u201cson\u201d (<\/span>\u2018ben\u2019<\/span><\/i>) is used six times, including the derogatory epithets \u201cson of a perverse, rebellious woman,\u201d and <\/span>\u2018ben mavet\u2019<\/span><\/i> \u201cmarked for death\u201d (lit. \u201cson of death\u201d). The repetitions of the word \u201cson\u201d emphasize Saul\u2019s deepest question to Jonathan: whose \u2018son\u2019 are you really? To whom – to which dynasty –\u00a0 do you owe your basic allegiance?<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. \u00a0A sea of tears and emotion<\/em>. \u201cLove\u201d (3 times in verse 17 alone!), sadness, rage, shame, and also the physical expression of these emotions: \u201cThey kissed each other and
