  1. Similar, and not by accident<\/span><\/i>. Samuel\u2019s declaration of purity of action is reminiscent of a similar speech of Moses, in Numbers 16, in response to the rebellion of Korah: “I have not taken the ass of any one of them, nor have I wronged any one of them.\u201d This invites a comparison between the two leaders and the challenges with which they grappled.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Who took what? Samuel\u2019s certificate of integrity, that he took nothing from the people, stands in stark contrast to the description of the king, which describes how he will do nothing but take and take from the nation. The root l-k-ch, \u201ctake,\u201d is repeated four times regarding the king in chapter 8, and four times in two verses here in our chapter.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Samuel is on the list. Samuel appears on the list of judges in ver 11, with Jerubaal, otherwise known as Gideon, Jephthah and another unidentified one named Bedan. Is that short for Avdon? Perhaps a nickname for Samson who is <\/span>ben Dan<\/span><\/i>, a son of the tribe of Dan. The commentators duke it out on that one<\/span><\/li>\n
