One should not leap too quickly to the conclusion that these are merely a stitching together of variant sources. From the writer\u2019s viewpoint, the institution of monarchy, with Saul as first king, is both a difficult and dubious process, and it cannot happen all at once. First there is the clandestine anointment, followed by an initiatory experience, under the nose of the Philistine prefect.
