“And just as Samuel was offering up the offering, the Philistines drew near to do battle with Israel, and the Lord thundered with a great sound on that day upon the Philistines and panicked them, and they were routed before Israel” (7:10).<\/span><\/p>\n

Commentary: <\/span>the Lord thundered…panicked them<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

The key terms restate a recurrent pattern in 1 Samuel: God\u2019s hand, or God\u2019s voice (the thunder), comes down on the enemy, and the enemy is smitten with \u201cpanic\u201d (<\/span>mehumah<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/i>. Compare, also, the end of Hannah\u2019s poem: \u201cthe Lord shatters His adversaries, \/ against them in the heavens He thunders.\u201d Essentially, it is God Who does battle, with the Israelite foot soldiers merely mopping after his celestial bombardment. This Deuteronomistic view will fade from the Saul and David narratives.<\/span><\/p>\n
