The survivor of the debacle first reported to Eli that \u201cIsrael has been routed before the Philistines, suffered a grievous plague, your two sons, Hofni and Phineas, have died, and the divine Ark was taken\u201d (17). According to the Scriptural narrative, it was only upon hearing of the fate of the Ark that Eli fell off his chair and died, suggesting that the reporter had (compassionately?) left the worst news for last and implying that Eli was affected more by its capture than by the news of his personal loss. [Note, too, the substitution of the euphemistic \u201csuffered a grievous plague\u201d for the actual accounting of KIAs (killed in action)].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the news is subsequently relayed to Phineas\u2019s pregnant wife, with the additional notice of the death of Eli, the sequence changed: \u201cWhen she heard the news that the divine Ark was captured, that her father-in-law had died, and so did her husband\u201d (19), she went into premature labor and died in childbirth.
