They are the very gods who struck Egypt with every blow in the wilderness\u201d (4:8)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commentary: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every blow<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hebrew <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">makah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also means \u201cplague\u201d, an obviously appropriate sense here, but it is important that the writer uses the same word in verse 10, though with a military meaning, for a theological irony is intended in the pun: they feared the might of the Lord Who struck such terrible blows against Egypt, and then they themselves strike a blow against Israel, which actually does not have God in its midst, only His sacred paraphernalia.
