Such is not the manner by which priests should comport themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For their sins, the family of Eli will not continue in the priesthood, but instead, God will establish for Himself a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>kohen ne\u02beeman<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018faithful priest\u2019, with an envisioned <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>bayit ne\u02beeman<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018enduring lineage\u2019 (lit. \u2018house\u2019), who will walk before the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mashiach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018anointed one\u2019<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(v. 35). The prophecy anticipates Zadok, who will emerge as the key priestly figure during the time of David and Solomon (2 Samuel 8:17, etc.; 1 Kings 4:4, etc.) and whose progeny will be considered by later Jewish tradition as the legitimate priestly lineage (Ezekiel 40:46, 43:19; 44:15; 48:11). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note further the lexical linkages between our passage in 1 Samuel 2 and 2 Samuel 7:16, where a similar promise is made to David regarding eternal kingship:\u00a0<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ne\u02beeman betcha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018enduring will be your lineage\u2019 (lit. \u2018house\u2019). \u00a0In short, the biblical ideal, beginning here in 1 Samuel 2, envisions royal and priestly lines walking step-in-step throughout the ages as the model of ancient Israelite leadership.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast to the prestige which will devolve upon the new priestly house, the next verse, v. 36, details what will happen to Eli\u2019s descendants. \u00a0Whoever remains of Eli\u2019s house will be poor and destitute, in search of the smallest <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u02beagorat kesef<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018payment of silver\u2019 and the most basic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>kikkar le\u1e25em<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018loaf of bread\u2019. \u00a0Recall that the priests owned no land and thus had no real livelihood beyond their role as cultic officiants. \u00a0They were dependent solely on the gifts and sacrifices offered in the Temple\/Tabernacle for food and sustenance. \u00a0Eli\u2019s descendants, accordingly, will beg for priestly work, even the most basic (such as cleaning up the blood and guts after the rituals had occurred), in order to eat \u2013 not \u2018a loaf of bread\u2019 (as earlier in the verse), but even a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>pat le\u1e25em<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018morsel of bread\u2019 (at the end of the verse). \u00a0In light of the gluttonous actions described earlier in the chapter in vv. 15\u201316, the punishment fits the crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowhere in the Bible is the nexus between language and literature seen more readily than here. The author invokes the rare verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sepa\u1e25eni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018assign to me\u2019 (from the root <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s-p-\u1e25<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in order to alliterate with the names of Eli\u2019s two sons. \u00a0Hence, the reader hears echoes of the names <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u1e25opni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018Hophni\u2019 and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pin\u1e25as<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u2018Phinehas\u2019 in this key word, thereby further emphasizing the message of the lost priestly lineage. \u00a0The four letters of \u05d7\u05e4\u05e0\u05d9 \u2018Hophni\u2019 and the five letters of \u05e4\u05d9\u05e0\u05d7\u05e1 \u2018Phinehas\u2019 all appear in the word \u05e1\u05e4\u05d7\u05e0\u05d9 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sepa\u1e25eni <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">samekh \u2013 pe \u2013 \u1e25et \u2013 nun \u2013 yod<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in anagrammatic fashion, thereby treating the reciter of the text to a graphic as well as an oral-aural delight.
