In exulting God’s powers, Hannah sings: “The Lord causes death and resurrects. He brings down to She’ol and raises up” (I Samuel 2:6).

According to the Talmud (Sanhedrin 92b), this verse was sung by the dead whom Ezekiel resurrected in the Valley of the Dry Bones. Rabbi Eliezer said: The dead whom Ezekiel resurrected stood up and uttered song: “The Lord causes death” in righteousness and “He resurrects” in mercy. But Rabbi Joshua said that they sang the verse exactly as it was originally sung by Hannah: “The Lord causes death and resurrects. He brings down to She’ol and raises up”.

This leads to a discussion about the historical reality of the resurrection of the dry bones (Ezekiel Chapter 37). Rabbi Judah said: Truly this was just a parable — foretelling the communal resurrection of the Jewish people by their return to the Land of Israel. Rabbi Nehemiah said to him: If the resurrection happened truly, why say it was just a parable; and if it was just a parable, why say it happened truly? — But actually, in truth, it was just a parable. Rabbi Eliezer the son of Rabbi Yosi the Galilean disagreed: The dead whom Ezekiel resurrected went up to the Land of Israel, married wives and begat sons and daughters. Rabbi Judah ben Bathyra rose to his feet and said: I am one of their descendants, and here are the Tefillin that my grandfather bequeathed to me from them!

The Mishnah (Sanhedrin 10:1) teaches that anyone who claims that the “Resurrection of the Dead” (tehiyyat ha-metim) is not derived from the Torah forfeits his place in the World to Come. Of the many rabbinic proofs that Resurrection is derived from the Torah, the following is particularly applicable to Hannah’s singing that the Lord resurrects (I Samuel 2:6): Resurrection may be derived from the verse, “Happy are they who dwell in Your house, they shall praise You forever – Selah” (Psalms 84:5). This verse does not say that “they praised You” but that “they shall praise You forever”.

To this day, mention of the biblical and rabbinic doctrine of the Resurrection of the Dead is incorporated repeatedly in the second benediction of the core Amidah prayer: “You are mighty forever, O Lord. You resurrect the dead. You are powerful to save. [You cause the wind to blow and the rain to fall]. You sustain the living with lovingkindness. You resurrect the dead with great mercies. You support the falling, heal the sick and free the captives. And You keep faith with those who sleep in the dust. Who is like unto You, O Master of Mightiness? And who resembles You? — a king who causes death and resurrects and who causes salvation to sprout up! You are trustworthy to resurrect the dead. Blessed are You, O Lord, who resurrects the dead”.

Image: Engraving of The Vision of The Valley of
