It’s nothing new – it’s the classic story of two wives – one loved, one less. One barren, one fruitful. And yet, the pain is deeper here. As the verses explain – each year Elkana and his two wives, Penina, and Hannah would go up to Shilo to bring sacrifices to God. Each time they would ascend, Peninah would eat with her children, each receiving a portion while Hannah would look on the side, with her single portion. The reminder of her barrenness stared her in the face each trip, but that wasn’t all. Each time, Peninah would mock Hannah, taunting her over her lack of children.

And so, for good reason, Hannah broke down. She cried. She prayed. She begged. All she wanted was one child. All she wanted was to be equal. To go up to Shiloh and feel blessed, not pained.

But her prayer came with a vow, a vow that leaves the reader troubled. She vows to God: if You give me a child, whom I want so dearly, I vow to give him up to you.

This vow makes absolutely no sense. She was being taunted for not having a child and so the greatest vindication and satisfaction for her would be to have a child and then give it up!? What is going on here?

I think that this story is coming to teach us something profound that we all know but rarely express. Hannah was clearly in a position of complete desperation. Emotionally, she simply couldn’t handle her reality anymore. That reality was that she was barren; that no matter how much she tried, she simply couldn’t do what Penina could – have a child. And so she turned to God and asked Him not for a child, but rather the ability to have one. Just to be able to say that she too could have one, even if that meant giving him right to God right away.

Sometimes, in moments of true desperation, we are willing to have moments with that which we want only to give it all up again. Hannah prayed to God, “show me that I too can have children. Show me I too can be like Penina. If just for a moment, let me feel equal.” Hannah prayed, “God, show me You’re there, show me that You care about me, that I matter. Grant me my vow so I know You’re listening.”

Sometimes we pray to have, and sometimes we pray to know we’re being heard, and to know we can.

2020-02-08
