A villain of the Holdfast type does not necessarily wish to cause harm. Nor does he (or she) necessarily hate the hero. The Holdfast merely wishes to protect the status quo, where he is in a position of power. Though he can wear many forms (from dragons and tyrants to obstructive parents), the Holdfast always stands between the hero and his mission. A hero, who is by nature \u201ca champion not of things become, but of things becoming\u201d (<em>The Hero with a Thousand Faces<\/em>, 289), must cross new thresholds to bring about new futures. He can\u2019t do so without overcoming the Holdfasts in his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel 1 places such a \u201cHoldfast\u201d in Hannah\u2019s path: the aging High Priest Eli. When Hannah \u201crises\u201d, he is \u201csitting\u201d. When Hannah weeps and prays and makes a bold vow, one that demands from God a reciprocal relationship, Eli merely watches. When Hannah promises God of her own volition that which Manoah\u2019s wife only gave him by His instructions, her devotion goes right above Eli\u2019s head. As a guardian of the way things are, Eli is incapable of seeing Hanna\u2019s behavior as anything but a violation. While Hannah is actively seeking a life-affirming way out of her misery, Eli is busy telling her off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some values are worth enforcing. But Eli judges Hannah by appearances, not values. Furthermore: The Book of Judges depicted in painful detail the kind of status quo that survived to Eli\u2019s time. Is this status quo truly worth preserving?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following chapters answer this question with a resounding \u2018no\u2019. They show us just where Eli\u2019s \u201cHoldfast\u201d ways lead him. Eli will watch his sons exploit their position for personal gain, and do naught but offer ineffectual reproofs. When God will reject his house and bring about his children\u2019s death, Eli will die as he had entered the story: stationary and passive, an old man on a chair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hannah, the woman who was not afraid to walk past Holdfasts and make a bid for a better future, will raise the son that will correct Eli\u2019s failures. Her son, who will continue her tradition of action and initiative, will constantly travel to bring justice to the Israelites, will actively lead them, and will be chosen by God to \u201cwalk before my anointed evermore.\u201d (2:35) God\u2019s message is clear: He rejects Eli\u2019s sedentary leadership. To break the status quo of Judges, a leader must act and take initiative. He must be walking
