    1. Cold comfort<\/span><\/i>. Elkanah, the loving husband, tries to comfort his infertile wife: \u201cWhy are you so sad? Am I not more devoted to you than ten sons?\u201d (verse 8). His attempts are rebuffed. And it\u2019s easy to understand why. Yet, on the sensitivity scale of spouses of the anguished barren women of the Tanach, Elkanah is up there, and far ahead of Jacob. Jacob says to Rachel in similar circumstances: \u201cJacob was incensed at Rachel, and said, \u2018Can I take the place of God, who has denied you fruit of the womb?\u2019\u201d (Genesis 30:2).<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Why today of all days?<\/span><\/i> Our story begins with a yearly ceremony, the family pilgrimage to Shiloh, replete with the sacrifice, and the pain and insult. What brought Hannah to break with routine, and do the thing that would end up changing her life? Was it an especially egregious insult from Peninah? Elkanah\u2019s lack of sensitivity? \u00a0Something else entirely?<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. A very special prayer<\/em>. <\/span>Such was Hannah\u2019s outpouring. And from the depths of this unique personal experience, this one-time outpouring of the heart, was established (according to tradition) the mandatory silent prayer (the Amidah, said thrice daily).<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Shmuel-Shaul<\/span><\/i>? The explanation given for the name Samuel, seems more fitting to the name Saul, whom we will meet in another seven chapters: \u201cShe named him Samuel (Shmu’el), meaning, \u201cI asked (she’iltiv) the LORD for him.\u201d\u2026 the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him (she’elati asher sha’alti). I, in turn, hereby lend him (hish’iltihu) to the LORD. For as long as he lives he is lent (sha’ul) to the LORD\u201d (verses 20; 27-8).<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. The boy was still very young (vehana\u2019ar na\u2019ar – verse 24)<\/span><\/i>. How much is wrapped up in these few words which describe the moment of parting. This mere boy, of such a tender age, just weaned. He is really just a boy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
