    The poorest servant-girl can have a child,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>A beggar’s daughter can give birth \u2014 not I,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>Who listens as they sing a lullaby<\/span>
    \n<\/span>About a vineyard, lush and undefiled.<\/span>
    \n<\/span>A bear, a wolf, a leopard \u2014 every wild,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>Ferocious beast can nurse its young \u2014 not I,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>Who once had seen a dreaming baby cry, \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
    \n<\/span>Then smile, recalling how his mother smiled. <\/span><\/p>\n

    A crab can reproduce, as can a vile<\/span>
    \n<\/span>And loathsome snake, as can the smallest fly \u2014<\/span>
    \n<\/span>Not I. \u00a0The fecund earth explodes with life,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>With progeny, with sons and daughters, while<\/span>
    \n<\/span>Bereft of leaf or root, I slowly die,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>A withered plant, an empty, barren wife. <\/span><\/p>\n

    II.<\/span><\/p>\n

    A month goes by, another month goes by,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>And then a third, a fourth, without a sign<\/span>
    \n<\/span>Of blood; a fifth \u2014 can they stretch out to nine \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
    \n<\/span>Full months of pregnancy? \u00a0At night I try<\/span>
    \n<\/span>To sleep, but cannot sleep; instead, I tie<\/span>
    \n<\/span>My dreams with stems, imagining the vine<\/span>
    \n<\/span>My little girl will plant, or Sabbath wine<\/span>
    \n<\/span>My little boy will learn to sanctify. <\/span><\/p>\n

    What miracle is this, O Lord of life,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>That in my womb, I cultivate a child,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>The seed for whom I prayed. \u00a0My husband’s eyes<\/span>
    \n<\/span>Are filled with tears when he beholds his wife,<\/span>
    \n<\/span>When he embraces me; his voice is mild<\/span>
