Although vastly outnumbered (the Benjaminites numbered but 26,000 plus the 700 left-handed sharpshooters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/214\/post\/55121\">we referenced back in chapter 3<\/a>), they managed to take out 10% of their opponents (22,000 in v.21 and another 18,000 in v.25). \u00a0It is at this juncture that the Israelites sought divine counsel via Phinehas the Priest, as we mentioned in the previous chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Phinehas\u2019 assent, the Israelites set up ambushes about Gibeah. They pretended to be routed, drawing the defenders out of the city (32). Then they sprang their trap, catching the Benjaminites betwixt and between (33-34), slaying 25,100 of them (35): 18,000 in the field of battle (44), 5,000 more on the wilderness road and 2,000 near Gid&#8217;om (45). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do the math, that adds up to 25,000, which is what v. 46 reports. Recalling, however, that v.35 reported total losses at 25,100, we \u00a0may side with either Rashi, who implies that the remaining 100 were omitted from the total because they were killed in unspecified locations, or with Radak, whose opinion is that Scripture rounded off the total to the nearest thousand. Since the total Benjaminite army was reported earlier as 26,700, that would leave between 1,600 and 1,700 survivors, but v.47 reports that only 600 soldiers took refuge in Rimon Rock, leaving us to speculate about the fate of the remaining 1,000. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever their exact number, the final chapter of the Book of Judges, which follows anon, presumes that only males survived, leaving the victors to confront an unanticipated result of their triumph: the possible demise of an entire
