Where chapter 1 was an introduction to the Israelites as a nation, the book continues with Samuel\u2019s hypothesis, proof, and finally, as we are coming to now, the conclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samuel\u2019s introduction to this period demonstrated the necessity of the Israelites working together. It was only through their unified endeavours that the Israelites were successful in conquering their individual tribal inheritances. That hypothesis of unity breeding nationhood persisted through the almost 360 years of judicial\/prophetic rule and has developed to include a second factor for successful, productive nationhood: a framework for national leadership. The proof that leadership must be broad and unified has been evidence-based throughout these chapters of cyclical leadership, national strength and falling from grace. And the solution began to develop in chapter 8 with hints of monarchic rule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In these later chapters we are given evidence of the need for a new kind of leadership from the flip side. What happens when a leader does not unite the people \u2013 when you have an Avimelech, a Jephthah and now a Marvel-like Samson who leads individualistically even if on behalf of his people? Samson goes it alone in his attempts, sometimes acting defensively and sometimes seeking vengeance, but always as a lone-ranger without mustering an army or engaging his community. \u00a0Samson single-handedly, or maybe better labeled double-handedly, since his super-hero powers were from the hand of God, took on the Philistines. Samson\u2019s downfall was also derived single-handedly by the betrayal by Delilah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the emerging decline into chaos and anarchy, Samuel\u2019s thesis on leadership, if that\u2019s at least in part what the Book of Judges is meant to be, is almost complete. These concluding chapters offer strong support for the \u00a0hypothesis of a need for a transformative leadership change, from individual prophets to monarchic rule: not an elected monarchy as the Israelites were promoting in chapter 8, but a monarch chosen by God, who will bring the Israelite to righteous nationhood.
