No character better epitomizes the ongoing systematic chaos than Samson, the dashingly handsome and long-locked warrior of the Jewish people. Like many biblical characters, he is a two-sided character. Despite being a priest and a judge, he fails time and time again to live up to the requirements of such positions. Nonetheless, he is larger than life character, who challenges gender norms, masculinity, and responsibility. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is the idealized warrior while simultaneously failing morally as a man and a military leader; he revels in his long and luscious hair but is easily weakened through his sexual drive and need for meaningful and emotional connection via Delilah. He is all powerful but vulnerable, the figure of a leader, but without depth and vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Chapter 16, we see this sensuality on full display which leads to him falling in love with Delilah, who then betrays him at the behest of the Philistines who reward her with lavish riches. As the only woman whom he ever loved, Delilah is able to subvert his power and weakens him. But, she also brings him to his ultimate climactic and heroic moment in which he destroys the Philistine Temple and serves as a sacrifice for the wellbeing and survival of the Jewish people. It is at his moment of death that he finally takes on the role of hero.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samson serves as a model for the monumental power we all possess and the potential we all have. More importantly, he shows us that we must have self- understanding, and the proper awareness needed when we implement our power. Samson is a cautionary character whose downfall illustrates the importance of using our gifts, skills and the opportunities we are presented responsibly and with careful attention.
