What is this about? Instructions for a \u201cSabbath of the Lord\u201d (25:2) are given: six years the Israelites are instructed to till the land and gather its produce but the seventh is a sabbath year for the land, when farmers cannot plant seeds, prune or harvest.\u00a0 Moreover, we have here the first mention in the Torah of the jubilee year (<em>yovel<\/em>), the fiftieth year. It is in this year that \u201cyou shall proclaim release throughout the land\u201d (25:10) or in the more famous translation, inscribed on a bell of the same name in Philadelphia, \u201cyou shall proclaim liberty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of the jubilee year and the sense of \u201crelease\u201d it gives to all the residents of the land is that all should know that there are no permanent owners, for all humans are tenants of God. This is stated explicitly in the middle of the portion, \u201cAnd the land must not be sold beyond reclaim, for the land is mine, you are strangers and temporary residents with me\u201d (25:23). Ramban explains that these words mean \u201cdon\u2019t make yourselves the main point (<em>ikar<\/em>)\u201d and Rashi says \u201cit is not yours.\u201d Both these explanations encourage those ceding their land to others to do so with humility, to see a purpose beyond themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The connection with the verse about being \u201cstrangers and temporary residents\u201d suggests the purpose of these rules, and their connection to the Sabbath, is that they are about putting limits on humans. Just as the weekly Sabbath is a cessation of work, a stoppage of deliberate action for a purposeful end, here not working the land, and allowing all ownership to revert back to its original tribal owners, is a kind of renunciation. The forfeiting of human power to work the land, and to do work one day out of seven, are both part of the humility we enact, that we will imitate God by ceding creative power for a limited period of time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To what end is this ceding of power?\u00a0 No one member of society can be free if all are not free, we learn from these laws; all members of society need access to land and earn a living. Bible professor Yairah Amit says that the \u201cJubilee law is a social law that opens new options for a better life to every member of Israelite society in economic straits.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sabbatical law and the jubilee law teach us that freedom comes when we recognize that humans have limits, do not have the power that God has, and because money and land don\u2019t\u2019 \u201cbelong\u201d to us but are only on loan from God, we are impelled to share our resources with all members of society. These laws remind us that God does not want us to forget that humans never have ultimate control, for we are merely strangers and temporary
