With each subsequent deliverer the narrative of that period is conspicuously absent of information about the ongoing leadership of the judge during the years of tranquility.

Beginning in chapter 8, when the Israelites appealed to Gideon to begin a monarchic line of leadership, we get a sense that the Israelites were searching for stability after these ever-repetitive cycles of tranquility, oppression and deliverance. But for now, in chapter 11, they seem to be reverting to their established protocol as they propose Jephthah as a purely military leader with the plea “Be our captain, that we may fight Amon.” But Jephthah wants more than that. “If I lead you in battle and you are delivered”, Jephthah negotiates, “then you need to make me your head.” Did Jephthah recognize that the Israelite model of leadership was on the cusp of changing, or is his counter-proposal a sign of a character flaw that will shortly become painfully evident? Did Jephthah understand where his skill-set lied and where it did not?

Harav Moshe Lichtenstein, in his Sicha “Yiftach: The Right Man at the Wrong Time” posits that within Jephthah’s response to the call for leadership lies evidence of his impending downfall. Jephthah may have been well-suited to be a “captain” – a deliverer, with battlefield traits of laser-focused determination and an obstinate adherence to rule and order. And his commitment to God was evident in his vow to make an offering of the first thing he sees should he return home victorious. But then Jephthah’s daughter greets his return and Jephthah insists that his vow be applied to the letter.

Had Jephthah appreciated his own strengths and weaknesses, and allowed for the consideration of other ideas, the consequence would not have been so disastrous. A modicum of regret, flexibility, the wisdom to seek counsel and appreciate contextual nuances would have served to allow the nullification of Jephthah’s vow and save his daughter. But Jephthah was incapable of bridging the gap between battlefield captain and all-round leader.

Image by: by Guillaume Rouille(1518?-1589) –
