No mention is made of which\u2014if any\u2014enemies he encountered, nor whether or how he prevailed; just the bare bones of his name, father\u2019s name, and his tribal affiliation (Issachar).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No greater detail is provided about the leadership role of his successor, Yair ha-Gil`adi, but there is\u2014at least\u2014some pertinent personal data, namely that he had thirty sons,who, together, administered thirty cities, an indication of the wealth and influence of their father.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are we to make of these notices? Does the paucity of historical information imply their relative unimportance? On the other hand, can people who led Israel without untoward incident for twenty three and twenty two years, respectively, be insignificant? The Talmud stipulates that all prophecies recorded in Tanakh have enduring relevance (BT Megillah 14a). Our challenge is to determine the enduring value of what appears, on the surface, to be of only limited import.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such value is provided by Yalkut Shim`oni, a midrashic anthology, in its observation (Judges #42) that every tribe produced a judge\u2014with the striking exception of Simeon, whose leadership potential was dealt a lethal blow by the nefarious activities of its Prince Zimri whose dalliance with a Midianite woman is described in Numbers 25. (In our comments on Judges 1, we observed that Simeon seems to disappear from subsequent biblical history).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, there is often significance to be found in relative insignificance. Even if neither Tola nor Yair won a striking military victory and even if their respective tenures in office were not marked by any extraordinary event, the mere fact of distributive leadership that they embody lends significance to their otherwise \u201cordinary\u201d guidance. Oftentimes, even footnotes need to be read.<\/span><\/p>\n","image":{"ID":55712,"id":55712,"title":"jud10-magnifying
