Among them was Eglon king of Moab who took possession of the City of Palms (i.e. Jericho) for eighteen years. God provided a deliverer— Ehud, a left-handed Benjamite (verses 12-15). Since “Benjamite” (Ben Ha-Yimani) seems originally to have meant “Son of the Strong Right-Hand” it is ironic that Ehud is specifically mentioned as being “left-handed”, because his right-hand was thought to be “shriveled up” (Aramaic “gamid”, Rashi on 3:15).

The biblical narrative continues with remarkable detail:

Now Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a cubit long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing.” After having presented Israelite tribute to the Moabite king, Ehud returns to Eglon, saying ‘Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you’. The king said to his attendants, ‘Leave us!’ And they all left…Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the king’s belly…Then Ehud went out to a passageway; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them … After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked … when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead. While they waited, Ehud got away.”

After Ehud rallies the Israelite forces, who defeat the Moabite enemy, the biblical narrative concludes that there was peace in the land for eighty years (verses 18-30).

Among the many discussion of this meticulously told tale, Baruch Halpern (The First Historians, 1988, Chapter 3) has drawn attention to the architectural aspects of this narrative. The primary action takes place in what is described as a “private upper room” (ba-‘aliyat ha-meqerah). On the basis of archaeological research, Halpern concludes that the royal “upper room was a throne platform overlooking and accessible from the audience chamber”. More problematic is how exactly Ehud effected his escape, partly because he is said to have exited via a “misdaron”, a word that occurs only here.

After weighing several previously offered alternatives, Halpern suggests that after having locked the “private upper room” from the inside, Ehud dropped down to a lower floor, part of an indoor sanitation system, between the beams that supported Eglon’s throne platform. Seen this way, Ehud’s stealthy escape from the locked chamber may be considered “The First Locked-Room Murder Mystery” (see Halpern, Bible Review 4/6, 1988). The earliest examples of this detective fiction sub-genre, in which a murderer makes a puzzling escape from the site of the crime, were thought — by less biblically-informed literary critics — to have originated only in modern times.

image: from Ford, Maddox, Brown Bible, 1908 /
