The Merneptah Stele, pictured here, is the earliest historical reference to a group called Israel, located in the land of Canaan. Dating to 1207 BCE, the stele focuses mainly on the Egyptian pharaoh Merneptah\u2019s campaign to Libya, but it includes a brief description of Egyptian military triumphs in Canaan. The text, which is written in Egyptian hieroglyphs, uses special signs called determinatives to distinguish population groups from cities. Israel is referred to as a people rather than a state, corresponding to the biblical depiction of Israel as a decentralized group of tribes in this period.<\/p>\n<p>Illustration: courtesy of George
