Joshua was particularly anxious about the prospective dangers of assimilation and intermarriage and he warned the people not to tolerate the presence of idolaters in their midst lest, they pose an existential threat to God\u2019s nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Know for certain that the LORD your God will not continue to drive these nations out before you; they shall become a snare and a trap for you, a scourge to your sides and thorns (<\/span>tzeninim<\/span><\/em>) in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you (v. 13).<\/span><\/p>\n

Both the thought and its literary formulation are familiar to us from an identical warning that Moses issued to the people shortly before his own departure.<\/span><\/p>\n

But if you do not dispossess the inhabitants of the land, those whom you allow to remain shall be stings (<\/span>tzeninim<\/span><\/em>) in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land in which you live (Num. 33:55) ;<\/span><\/p>\n

These are the only two places in the entire Tanakh in which the word <\/span>tzeninim<\/span><\/em> appears and their use in identical contexts strongly supports the assumption that Joshua was deliberately paraphrasing a Torah verse. While this observation alone is hardly novel or unexpected, in a retrospective we will soon offer on the Book of Joshua we will explain why Joshua consistently displayed a preference for the Book of Numbers\u2014as he did in this particular
