  1. Literary echoes<\/span><\/i>. In Joshua\u2019s farewell oration, there are a number of quotes and allusions to expressions in previous books.   2. Snares, traps, scourges and thorns<\/span><\/i>. The images used for impending catastrophe stem from the geopolitical context. Evil neighbors don\u2019t always mean big all-out war, but more often a continuous nuisance: \u201cthey shall become a snare and a trap for you, a scourge to your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land \u2026\u201d (verse 13).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. And on a more personal note<\/span><\/i>. Joshua notes casually: \u201cI am now going the way of all the earth…\u201d (verse 14). This raises the question of Joshua\u2019s underlying tone to the people: Is he optimistically trying to inspire them to choose the good? Or is he motivated more by fear of what is to come?<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. 100% satisfaction guaranteed?<\/i> \u201c…not one of the good things that the LORD your God promised you has failed to happen; they have all come true for you\u201d (verse 14). Why is it so important for Joshua to emphasize that absolutely everything was delivered in full? Perhaps because of the challenge that is raised by the nations that are left, that still remain in the Land?
