With that now accomplished, these tribes are ready to return east to claim their own inheritance. On arrival they immediately set up an altar to serve as a showpiece of their commitment to God and their nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These eastern tribes were worried about how their children would interact with the majority of the nation who had settled west of the Jordan River. As outliers they were grappling with their identity and sense of belonging. Would their brethren to the west come to disregard those of their nation who lived among other nations? Would their own children come to feel alienated and would that ultimately lead to a rejection of their place among the nation that served God?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to serving as a signpost and reminder to the Israelites on both sides of the border that neither time nor distance should be allowed to erode their unity in their service to God, this altar also demonstrated a level of spiritual maturity that had now been reached by these tribes. When they first asked for this land as their inheritance, it was to capitalize on the fertility of it for the benefit of their substantial livestock. Rashi points out their evident concern was for their material possessions over their children and spiritual wellbeing. So, Moses commanded them to enter the land to the west, to toil and battle alongside their brothers. Only when the western land was fully conquered could these three tribes, who had emotionally and physically connected to that land, return to their land across the border. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That investment of time and labour, alongside witnessing the miracles brought by God in the land, brought the people of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh to now consider their children, their spirituality, and the well-being of the collective first: evidenced by the altar meant to preserve their place within the Jewish nation and safeguard their future
