Just as the allocation of the land amongst the tribes and the establishment of the cities of refuge fulfilled conditions laid down by Moses, so does the current chapter satisfy the terms he set out for the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of Manasseh:<\/span><\/p>\n

If you volunteer for military service\u2026 and serve until the Lord disperses His enemies\u2026 and the land is conquered\u2026 then you will be entitled to your land (Numbers 32:20 ff.).<\/span><\/p>\n

After 14 years of conquest, Joshua permitted these two-and-one-half tribes to return to their families and possessions on the eastern bank of the Jordan. Prior to crossing, however, they paused to erect an imposing altar (v.10), triggering the suspicions of the remaining tribes that the purpose of the altar was idolatrous. A delegation led by the High Priest Phineas (v.14) determined that their intentions were pure and the potential for a civil war was defused.<\/span><\/p>\n

The argument the tribes of Trans Jordan offered in their defense resonates with a contemporary issue: the relationship between the Jews of Israel and Diaspora Jewry. Here is what the departing tribes said to their brothers remaining in Israel:<\/span><\/p>\n

We have acted out of anxiety lest your children challenge our children in the future saying, What have you to do with the Lord God of Israel? God made the Jordan the boundary between us\u2026 You have no share in the Lord\u2026 So we have erected this altar\u2026 to serve as an everlasting witness between us\u2026 (vs.21-29)<\/span><\/p>\n

Even though they had fought side by side for 14 years and the physical distance that was to divide them was minimal, there was still the fear that their separation would lead to their spiritual and religious estrangement. <\/span><\/p>\n

How much more so should we worry about the prospects of the alienation of Diaspora Jewry from Israel, given the considerable increase of both time and distance, and work toward sustaining mutual understanding and support?<\/span><\/p>\n
