  1. Only in the Torah! (and here\u2026)<\/span><\/i>. The formulation: \u201cThe Lord said to\u2026 saying, \u2018Speak to the Israelites\u2026\u2019\u201d appears only in the Torah – and in verse 1 of our chapter.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Take the legal challenge<\/span><\/i>. For the advanced reader: how are the laws from the Torah expressed in verses 3-6. Which parts come from Exodus? From Numbers? And which from Deuteronomy?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Gimme refuge<\/span><\/i>. Cities of refuge are regular cities. The accidental manslaughterer (after he has been received, and after having been judged and found that his act was indeed unintentional and thus he his deserving of protection) lives in a completely normative environment.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. How long?? <\/i>The city of refuge was both a form of protection – and of prison. Until when? \u201cHe shall live in that city …until the death of the high priest who is in office at that time.
