Whether a glossy trail snaking through a rusty desert landscape, a deep blue stream cutting through a rainforest, or a crisp mountain spring of melting snow gathering pace on descent, a river is a source of nourishment. A river provides water, transport, food and life for the people, animals and plants along its course. A river carves the landscape, forming wadis and trails and valleys and caves. Yet, while a river’s impact on the landscape may seem fixed, a river is on a perpetual journey. A river flows from icy mountain tops, tumbles down spectacular waterfalls, gurgles through towns and cities, farmland and forest, until it reaches the sea and is swallowed up by the wild and unforgiving ocean.

The Hebrew word nachal describes a torrent of rushing water, a strongly flowing stream, a river. As we read the Book of Joshua, Joshua leads the people of Israel across the river Jordan, into the land of Canaan, the land that God had promised them. Joshua divides up the land, granting each tribe their portion, their inheritance, their nachalah. And after this process is complete, Joshua receives a reward: ‘When they had finished dividing the land for inheritance by their borders, the people of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them’ (Joshua 19:49). Joshua is granted his own portion of the land, his nachalah, his inheritance.

The Hebrew word for inheritance stems from the same root letters as river: nun, chet, lamed. This may seem puzzling at first. But an inheritance is not unlike a river. Both are things that can easily slip through our fingers. Both can be temporarily ours, but we are custodian, looking after it for future generations, rather than owner. We are the inheritors of our tradition. Jewish tradition exists, if we look after it, protect it, practice it, and pass it on to younger generations, just as earlier generations passed it to us.

Sometimes we have to ask, what is flowing to us? What have we let get swept away in the currents? Is there something holding us back from moving forward to where we need to be? Our tradition is like a river. It ebbs and flows. But if we protect it, care for it, and treat it respectfully, it will continue to flow to future generations and beyond.

image: Yardenit, Kinneret /
