  1. Machir – nice to meet you<\/span><\/i>. In verse 1 we meet Manasseh\u2019s first born, Machir, who heads the dominant family in Gilead: \u201cSince Machir, the first-born of Manasseh and the father of Gilead, was a valiant warrior, Gilead and Bashan were assigned to him.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. The promise and its fulfillment<\/span><\/i>. The fulfillment of the promise made to the daughters of Zelophehad back in Numbers is phrased in terms that are reminiscent of the promise itself. Here, in verse 4: \u201cThey appeared before the priest Eleazer, Joshua son of Nun, and the chieftains\u2026\u201d; there (Numbers 27:1-2), they appeared before Moses and the chieftains\u2026<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Complaints – and low marks<\/span><\/i>. The complaints of the Josephites who had trouble conquering their portions, and griped that they were deprived (verses 12-18), is presented in contrast to the tenacious valor and stalwart dignity of Caleb, of the tribe of Judah, in acquiring his portion (chapter 14).
