These two tribes, Judah and Joseph, were the most important in ancient Israel. Their pivotal roles were already indicated by the arrangement of the camp of Israel, during the peregrinations in the wilderness.

During that period, Judah and its associated tribes of Issachar and Zebulun were arrayed on the prestigious eastern flank, along the axis of approach to the Tabernacle (see Num. 2:1-9, 3:38). The Joseph encampment, in contrast, composed of the tribes of Ephraim, Menashe, and Benjamin, was positioned on the western side of the Tabernacle (2:18-24), opposite the sacred enclosure of the Holy of Holies (3:23-26). In effect, the Tabernacle was bracketed by these two tribes of Judah and Joseph, highlighting not only their importance relative to the other tribes, but also underscoring the tension concerning their conflicting claims to control over the sacred precinct and, by extension, to the exercise of authority and leadership over the nation.

In fact, much was suggested in this array that presaged the future destiny of the people of Israel. Israel’s first king, Saul, hailed from Benjamin — a member of the Joseph camp. David, his nemesis and successor, was from Judah. Soon after the demise of his son Solomon, the ancient tribal rivalries resurfaced. The united kingdom of Israel dissolved, pitting Judah in the south against the kingdom of Ephraim or Israel in the north. And so, the people remained divided until the bitter end: the conquest and exile of the northern kingdom by the Assyrians followed by the destruction of Jerusalem and the kingdom of Judah some 150 years later by the Babylonians.

Both Joseph and Judah embodied dynamic leadership and ambition. Both brothers exemplified spiritual development and maturation, overcoming setbacks to triumph in the end.

In the Book of Joshua, the prominence of the two is awarded with expansive territories that are delineated ahead of any of the other tribes. But the fundamentals are to be found in the narratives of the Book of Genesis, where Judah is designated for leadership and Joseph for success. Initially, Joseph and Judah are pitted against each other as rivals, but in the end they are together responsible for reuniting the family of Israel and for ensuring its well-being in Egypt. It is therefore not only the perils of discord that are indicated by their tense relationship, but the promise of harmony and attainment as well.

Joshua: The Challenge of the Promised Land (Jerusalem: Koren, 2015); Chapter: “Judah and Joseph”

Image: map of Ya’akov Oyshpitz, Ish ‘al Diglo, 1817

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/jo16-camp.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1226,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/jo16-camp.jpg","2048x2048-width":1907,"2048x2048-height":1522
Judah v.
