  1. One opposite the other, one following the other<\/em>. Despite the differences in style between the two parts of the chapter, there is a parallelism between them, both of which juxtapose Moses and Joshua: two successful national leaders. Thus Joshua is presented as the direct heir to Moses\u2019 leadership. Even in the area of conquest, which was not Moses\u2019 main gig, Joshua followed in his footsteps.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Comrades in Arms<\/em>. Behind every successful leader, there stands – an entire nation. \u201cMoses, the servant of the LORD, and the Israelites, vanquished them\u2026\u201d (v. 6) and in v. 7: \u201cJoshua and the Israelites defeated…\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u201cTo Mount Halak which ascends to Se\u2019ir\u201d<\/em> (v. 7). This straightforward geographic description is actually a very tactile literary allusion, harking back to Jacob and Esau, for \u201cHalak\u201d means \u201csmooth\u201d and Se\u2019ir (a known place name) can also mean \u201chairy,\u201d as in Genesis 27:11: \u201cJacob answered his mother Rebekah, \u201cBut my brother Esau is a hairy man(se\u2019ir) \u00a0and I am smooth-skinned
