We learn that “When you arrive in the land of Canaan that I give you as a possession and I will place the plague of ‘tza’ra’at’ upon a house in the land that you possess” (Leviticus 14:34) Though this affliction had been able to be transmitted by humans before, it is only now, once the Israelites enter the land that it can be in their houses.

As we have seen in the recounting of how to be cured from ‘tzara’at’ in earlier chapters of Leviticus, this plague is not just a disease, it is a reminder of a spiritual lack, of something in a person’s attitude that needs adjustment. Now that the Israelites will be possessing the land, the description of the affliction here seems to be suggesting that their relationship to their houses has to change as well.

The Talmud, in Yoma 11b, discusses this verse and says that there is an unhealthy sense of possession when a person thinks a home is his alone and that he need not lend things to others when asked. The measure-for-measure punishment meted out to this stingy individual is that he must remove all belongings from the house (Leviticus 14:36) so that all in the community are able to see what is in this person’s possession. The level of responsibility, both to the land itself and to care for one another has changed now that the land belongs to the Israelites. To truly possess it, they must acknowledge that it is not solely theirs, but has been given to them by God, who wishes them to continue to distribute the gifts which have been bestowed upon them. When a person shares their possessions, their house will not be afflicted with this plague.

Paired with this portion this year is the Haftarah for the Sabbath before Passover, from Malachi 3:4-24 which ends with the injunction that “he will return the heart of the parents to children and the heart of children to their parents” (3:24). The sense the Haftarah conveys, that in order for teaching to be passed along there must be a reconciliation and an understanding between the generations, is the same sense of solidarity that sharing items from your home with others conveys. To be in the land, to have some kind of permanence and to be able to transmit anything, whether a house or a teaching, one needs to have the empathy with others that will lead to both sharing of possessions and reconciliation between generations.

2020-05-24
