While perhaps not as climactic or well-known as the Israelites\u2019 flight across the Sea of Reeds in Exodus 14, the account in Joshua 4 of another miraculous water crossing is worth remembering\u2014with the help of no fewer than twenty-four monumental stones, according to this chapter.<\/span><\/p>\n

The twelve stones that God commands Joshua to set up on the bank of the Jordan make sense. They make sense as enduring witnesses to the moment that the Israelites set foot in the land that was destined to be theirs. They make sense as a monument to the twelve tribes that together form one people. These twelve stones, drawn from the very river whose waters \u201cwere cut off because of the Ark of the Lord\u2019s Covenant\u201d (Joshua 4:7) to allow the people to cross and erected at the very site where they emerged dry-shod into a new phase of their journey home, make symbolic sense as \u201ca memorial for all time\u201d (ibid.), one to inspire children to ask questions and hear soul-bolstering tales of their ancestors\u2019 miraculous arrival in the land.<\/span><\/p>\n

The other twelve stones in this chapter, however, are a bit of a head-scratcher. In 4:9, just after we read that each tribal representative did as their leader had commanded and carried a stone out of the Jordan to be set up on the shore, Joshua does something curious: \u201cJoshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, at the spot where the feet of the priests bearing the Ark of the Covenant had stood.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Why bother? The waters of the Jordan, after all, rushed in and submerged this second set of stones as soon the Ark and its priestly escort joined the rest of the Israelites on the shore. What was the point of leaving rocks in the riverbed, where only a drought might reveal them?<\/span><\/p>\n

When our personal rivers are running full, it might be enough to look back at a milestone accomplishment and give thanks for the moment that we \u201cmade it.\u201d In times when our souls are parched, though, perhaps it is especially important to recall the journey that took us to our past victories. We might then draw strength from the knowledge that we <\/span>can<\/span><\/i> make it, if only we walk the path step by step.<\/span><\/p>\n
