Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign among you&#8230;These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever\u2026 And they are there to this day &#8230; Joshua said to the Israelites: In the future when your descendants ask their parents: What do these stones mean?\u2019 tell them, Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground. For the Lord your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The Lord your God did to the Jordan what he had done to the Sea of Reeds when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the Lord is powerful and so that you might always fear the Lord your God\u201d (Joshua 4:4-24).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In what way the stones taken from the Jordan may still be \u201cthere to this day\u201d is a question for archaeologists, historians and biblical commentators. According to the Metzudat David commentary to Joshua 4:9, the twelve stones continue to exist for anyone reading this phrase now and forever. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, as a living memorial to the Crossing of the Jordan, the Israeli Knesset, in 2016, declared \u201cthe tenth day of the first month, when the people went up from the Jordan\u201d an annual national holiday, \u201cAliyah Day\u201d, to commemorate the Jewish People entering the Land of Israel in the time of Joshua \u2013 regarded as the original \u201cAliyah\u201d. This year the tenth of the Hebrew month of Nisan (the \u201cfirst month\u201d according to Biblical reckoning) falls on April 15, 2019. \u201cAliyah Day\u201d is also celebrated to acknowledge modern Aliyah, immigration to the restored Jewish State, and to honor the ongoing contributions of Olim (&#8220;Jewish immigrants&#8221;) to Israeli society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:
